Impacts of Global Warming and Elevated CO2 on Sensory Behavior in Predator-Prey Interactions: A Review and Synthesis

Abstract: Ecosystems are shaped by complex interactions between species and their environment. However, humans are rapidly changing the environment through increased carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions, creating global warming and elevated CO 2 levels that affect ecological communities through multiple processes. Understanding community responses to climate change requires examining the consequences of changing behavioral interactions between species, such as those affecting predator and prey. Understanding the underlying s… Show more

“…Transcriptomic studies investigating mechanisms of these altered behaviors in response to OA are restricted to a few systems. While there are several reviews on the impacts of OA on fish behavior [137][138][139][140][141][142], we will briefly highlight the studies that link gene expression and physiological responses. In a variety of marine fish, high pCO 2 can dampen responses to alarm and predator cues, behaviors that have large impacts on survival [137,143,144].…”

“…One of the biggest challenges facing civilization of the twenty‐first century is the unprecedented climate change resulting from global warming, a change mainly driven by anthropogenic activities . The biorefinery complex is seen as a more benign means of producing useful products/medicines for humans.…”

“…It is particularly important to advance our understanding of the mechanisms behind altered predator-prey interactions under ocean acidification, as they are crucial for survival, social interactions and learning (Ferrari et al 2010; Draper and Weissburg 2019). Predator kairomones and dietary cues shape trophic cascades, structure communities and mediate food webs (Hahn et al 2019; Cohen and Forward Jr 2003; Poulin et al 2018).…”
