Impacts of Emerging Contaminants on Surrounding Aquatic Environment from a Youth Festival

Abstract: The youth festival as we refer to Spring Scream, a large-scale pop music festival, is notorious for the problems of drug abuse and addiction. The origin, temporal magnitudes, potential risks and mass inputs of emerging contaminants (ECs) were investigated. Thirty targeted ECs were analyzed by solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS). Sampling strategy was designed to characterize EC behavior in different stages (before and after the youth festival), ba… Show more

“…The human fecal matter also contributes to subsequent nitrogenous compounds in the water (Perakis and Hedin, 2002). The levels of contamination in freshwater as well as estuarine ecosystems are expected to increase with the human population and activities, as stated by Jiang et al (2015). The low values recorded during AGF were mainly caused by phytoplankton, as evidenced by their high photosynthetic activity.…”

“…More recently, Lin et al (2014) reported that KET concentrations at two STPs in Taipei and Kaohsiung were several times higher than the highest KET concentrations found in this study. Jiang et al (2015) reported that median KET concentrations at Nanwan and Kenting STPs in southern Taiwan were 18,633 and 84,666 ng L À1 , respectively. Thus, KET loads in STPs of major cities in Taiwan are likely much higher than or at least similar to the highest loads observed in this study.…”
