Impacts of Bush Encroachment on Wildlife Species Diversity, Composition, and Habitat Preference in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Laikipia, Kenya

Abstract: Savannah ecosystems are currently facing a biome shift that changes grasslands to woody dominated landscapes, attributable to habitat degradation. In Ol Pejeta Conservancy (OPC), Euclea divinorum, an unpalatable and invasive woody species, is expanding to former savannah ecosystems with potential effects on herbivores key resources, wildlife species diversity, composition, and habitat use. We investigated wildlife species diversity, composition, and habitat preference or avoidance by wildlife in the conservanc… Show more

“…Increased competition and potential elimination of some herbivorous species may occur through decreased grazing capacity, as bush encroachment can decrease land productivity [2]. Multiple studies have discussed the effects of bush encroachment on herbivore abundance and distribution [63,[92][93][94]. These parameters can affect predator search and encounter success, as fewer prey in an area may lead to increased search times and decreased encounters [48].…”

“…Tanzania is classified as semiarid, with highly-variable rainfall falling in one or two seasons, which are separated by a long dry season (Borhara et al, 2020) Kenya 39% Rainfall is highly variable in space and time, with a generally bimodal pattern. The average annual rainfall ranges from approximately 300 mm in the Amboseli Basin, to over 2000 mm in the highland areas (Kavwele et al, 2017). Zambia 26% Rainfall varies over a range of 500 to 1400 mm.…”
