This report describes the case of pineapple residues as potential feedstock for new carbon-based materials, especially the use of pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) in textiles. Currently, pineapple crop residues are an environmental burden and their discharge an important cost for the pineapple industry in many tropical countries. The use of pineapple residues as feedstock for biomaterials could create potentially a win-win situation: The pineapple industry can add value to crop residues that are currently a costly waste, while the residues provide a valuable feedstock for various biomaterials contributing to the bioeconomy.Using Costa Rica as a case study, the objectives of this study were to:1. Identify pineapple residue valorization options with a focus on the characteristics of PALF for textiles.2. Estimate the amount of pineapple residues potentially available for PALF.3. Better understand the agronomic, technical, economic, social-institutional bottlenecks hampering the transition towards a biomaterial transition.4. Identify follow-up R&D tracks to deal with the identified bottlenecks with focus on the total use of pineapple residues. This study identifies five major application domains for pineapple residues, i.e., fibers (including PALF for textile), chemical compounds, animal feed, substrate, and energy. Because only 10-20% of the dry matter of the pineapple leaves consists of PALF the remaining residual biomass will also have to find an application (in the bioeconomy) for enhancing the economic viability and optimizing the sustainable use of PALF in the textile and apparel industry. Cascading of different valorization options may increase the resource use efficiency and the economic value of the pineapple residues.Current management costs of pineapple residues in Costa Rica varies between 32 and 81 USD/ton dry matter. The amounts of crop residues and PALF that each year come available after the second harvest of pineapples in Costa Rica are large enough for scalable solutions. We estimate that annually ≈ 620,000 t dry matter of crop residues is available for valorization options, which contains about 45,800 and 91,600 t PALF per year. At the same time, biogas (LPG) can be generated from the crop residues in an amount sufficient to meet about 13% of the national LPG requirements per year, which is currently based for 100% on imports.Despite the large amount of biomass available and the need for more environmental-friendly ways to dispose pineapple residues up to date there are no large-scale initiatives to bring any of the identified valorization options to scale in Costa Rica. The objective of this work was to produce activated carbon from the agricultural waste known as pineapple stubble, and to test its effectiveness in the removal of methylene blue and surfactants. Activated carbon was prepared using ZnCl2 and H3PO4 as activating agents and impregnation ratios of 2: 1 and 4:1 between the agent (mL) and the precursor (g) were evaluated. It was also investigated the need or not of a drying stage prior to carbonization. The produced activated carbon was characterized through FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, N2 physisorption analysis, elemental analysis and electron microscopy. Methylene blue adsorption tests were performed to determine the adsorption effectiveness of the different activated carbons produced. For such evaluation, a 23 factorial design was used, and statistical analysis determined that the activated carbon with the highest adsorption of methylene is produced under the following conditions: ZnCl2 as activating agent, an impregnation ratio of 4:1 and with no drying step prior to carbonization. This produced activated carbon is also effective in the adsorption of the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate and for the surfactants present in the gray water obtained after washing clothes with commercial detergent. In these cases, removal efficiencies above 98 % were achieved. With respect to the characteristics of this activated carbon, it was observed a surface area of 685.5 m2/g, a total pore volume of 0.53 cm3/g, and an average pore diameter of 3.1 nm. Results achieved in the present study demonstrate that is possible to produce effective activated carbon for the removal of methylene blue and surfactants from an agricultural waste such as pineapple stubble.

La finalidad de este proyecto fue evaluar el uso del producto del tratamiento de material lignocelulósico del rastrojo de piña, para la producción de azúcares, como sustrato en la reacción de reformado en fase acuosa (APR); con el fin de producir hidrógeno utilizando un catalizador de níquel soportado en alúmina. Se realizó la caracterización del rastrojo de piña utilizado (MD2). Se trabajó con un diseño estadística factorial 23, para realizar el estuio de la hidrólisis del rastrojo, con el fin de estudiar el efecto de la concentración de ácido sulfúrico diluido (1 %m/m y 3%m/m), de la temperatura (100 °C y 140 °C) y de la relación sólido-líquido (1:6 g/mL y 1:9 g/mL). En el proceso de reformado en fase acuosa (APR), se definió un 5 % de masa de catalizador con respecto a la masa de glucosa en la mezcla de reacción obtenida de la hidrólisis ácida. Se establece una temperatura de reacción de 473.15 K y un tiempo de reacción de 2 horas, variando el porcentaje de níquel en el catalizador. Se utilizan como niveles en el porcentaje de níquel 5%, 20% y 35 % soportado en alúmina comercial. Se encuentra que la tasa de producción de hidrógeno máxima fue de 221 mmol gcat-1 h-1, existiendo diferencia estadística entre el catalizador con 35 % de níquel utilizadas.
