Impacted Mandibular Premolar Concomitant with Compound–Complex Odontome in a 13-year-old Girl: A Case Report

Abstract: Odontomas, the benign odontogenic tumors of epithelial and mesenchymal origin, are very common in occurrence and are now widely accepted as hamartomas. Odontomes are invariably composed of enamel and dentin, and may also have variable amounts of cementum and pulp. Largely, odontomas have been categorized into the compound and complex varieties. “…16,17 Although odontoma is normally asymptomatic, it can cause more serious problems such as pain, inflammation of the nearby soft tissues, infection, and suppuration if it spreads into the mouth. 18,19 Facial asymmetry, halitosis, malocclusion and delayed tooth eruption have also been recorded in some cases. 17,20 Despite its great size, the erupted odontoma in this case was asymptomatic, and the patient had not detected it in her mouth because of her low socioeconomic status.…”

“…Even though the procedure is straightforward in the great majority of cases, it can still be plagued by serious complications such as inferior alveolar nerve IAN injury and mandibular fracture. [1][2][3][4][5] Evidence indicates that depth of impaction, proximity of the tooth to the mandibular canal, surgical technique, intra-operative nerve exposure and the surgeon's experience may be associated with an increased risk of IAN demage.…”

“…The surgical removal of impated mandibular premolar can be decided in case of patients complaints or if it is needed because of rehabilitation reasons. [1][2][3] Preoperative assessment of surgical difficulty is fundemental to correctly plan the extraction of the impacted premolar.…”
