Impact of Yoga on Inflammatory Biomarkers: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Background: Many chronic conditions, including heart disease, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis, are associated with underlying chronic inflammatory processes. Literature reviews have analyzed a variety of integrative therapies and their relationships with chronic inflammation. This systematic review is unique in reporting solely on yoga’s relationship with inflammation. Its purpose was to synthesize current literature examining the impact of yoga interventions on inflammatory biomarkers in adults with chronic … Show more

“…Yoga and meditation as a combined intervention is often used by cancer survivors for symptom management, and a recent systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) showed that these combination interventions have strong beneficial effects on the QOL of oncological patients. 16,17 Several studies demonstrate the positive effects of yoga with meditation on pain, sleep, fatigue, biomarkers, 18 and QOL in cancer survivors. 19,20 The Society of Integrative Oncology guidelines addressed the use of integrative therapies for the management of adverse treatment effects, and an American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) expert panel endorsed yoga and meditation for stress management and depression or mood disorders and improved QOL.…”

“…All of these had significantly higher serum concentration after the yoga intervention; however, IL‐10 (anti‐inflammatory cytokine) and IL‐12 (pro‐inflammatory cytokine) decreased after the yoga intervention 33 . A recent systematic review examining 15 studies of yoga and inflammation markers in variable chronic conditions, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and autoimmune disease, concluded that yoga might be a viable modality to reduce inflammation depending on yoga dose 34 . Cortisol, BDNF, and cytokines dynamics have also been studied in depression, fatigue, and other psychological disorders, as they often coexist with anxiety; however, results from these studies are inconsistent and inconclusive 35–39 …”

“…Yoga brings down the levels of stress hormones that promote inflammation, lowers the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, TNF-α, and CRP [ 23 ]. A recent review indicates Yoga as a feasible intervention in reducing inflammatory processes in chronic disorders [ 24 ].…”
