Impact of UV-A radiation on erythemal UV and UV-index estimation over Korea

Abstract: Because total UV (TUV) in the UV-A region is 100 times higher than in the UV-B region, UV-A is a considerable component when calculating erythemal UV (EUV) and UV-index. The ratio of EUV to TUV in the UV-A value [EUV(A)/TUV(A)] is investigated to convert the EUV(A) from TUV(A) for broadband observation. The representative value of EUV(A)/TUV(A), from the simulation study, is 6.9 × 10 −4 , changing from 6.1 × 10 −4 to 7.0 × 10 −4 as aerosol optical depth, total ozone and solar zenith angle change. By adopting t… Show more

“…For the purpose of global coverage with spatially dense observation network, the EUV observation instruments have primarily been designed to the broadband observation (e.g., Seckmeyer et al 2010 ). Based on the broadband observation instruments, the EUV radiation has been monitored and analyzed by considering the variation of atmospheric conditions (e.g., clouds, ozone, and aerosol) (e.g., Fioletov et al 2001 ; McKenzie et al 2011 ; Park et al 2015 , 2016 ).…”

“…The UV-B and UV-A reaching the earth's surface cause most biological damage in humans; at varying degrees. Park et al (2015) reported that due to the varying effects of solar UV radiation, erythemal ultraviolet radiation (EUVR) was introduced to monitor and quantify the biological damages. EUVR is evaluated as the spectral UV irradiance weighted with the standard erythema action spectrum curve adopted by the Commission Internationale de l' Eclairage (CIE) in 1987; hence, the relative contribution of the irradiance at each wavelength to the induction of erythema on the human skin (McKinlay and Diffey, 1987;Fountoulakis et al, 2020;Webb et al, 2011).…”

“…e widely used action spectrum for the erythemal dose is that of the Commission International on Illumination (CIE) [5]. Because prolonged exposure to UV Ery leads to harmful erythemal dosing, UV Ery observation networks have focused primarily on UV-B (ranges from 280 to 315 nm) measurements, with some consideration of UV-A (ranges from 315 to 400 nm) measurements [7]. In addition to its adverse effects, UV radiation has several beneficial effects on human health, such as perceived improved appearance, enhanced mood through endorphin release, and a reduction of blood pressure [8,9].…”
