Impact of unpredictable renewables on gas-balancing design in Europe

Abstract: The gas system in Europe is facing increasing unpredictability due to the interactions with the electricity generation system. Indeed, gas fired power plants make up an important backup technology to deal with intermittency induced by wind-power integration. Therefore, the flexibility needs with respect to unpredictable power generation are actually transferred to the gas market. Applying the well-known electric power generation concepts of 'unit commitment' and 'dispatching' to the gas market, a hypothetical … Show more

“…However, given the current import dependence and the aim to displace imported gas with domestic sources, in reality the conflict is likely to be very weak. There is also evidence that because of the variability of both wind and solar power generation, the EU will increasingly need to balance power production with gas power plants [58,108]. The interaction is thus assessed as coherent, provided that effective ancillary policies are in place to promote power generation from RES.…”

“…Due to its nature wind energy production is difficult to predict and its energy generation is neither constant nor stable [6,7]. Despite such difficulties associated with its predictability and instability of wind energy generation, wind energy is one of the fastest growing energy industries with the EU having a leading role having a capacity of covering 8% of the EU's total energy demand from wind power [8,9].…”

“…The electricity from such renewable sources is converted into hydrogen with the help of electrolysis: 2H 2 O → 2H 2 + O 2 . An issue with intermittent generation of wind or solar electricity is the intrinsically unpredictable large variation, both in the long (annual and seasonal) and the short (daily and hourly) term. When electricity demand does not synchronise well with electricity production then networks, markets and security of supply may be at stake.…”
