Impact of Unilateral Sinus Surgery With Resection of the Turbinates by Means of Midfacial Degloving on Nasal Air Conditioning

Abstract: Radical sinus surgery with resection of the turbinates by means of midfacial degloving seems to disturb the climatization of the inspiratory air in the nasal cavity. Reduced absolute humidity and temperature may contribute to crusting, bleeding, and nasal dryness as frequent complaints of patients after aggressive sinus surgery with resection of the turbinates.

“…Measurements of nasal conditioning were performed as described previously [20][21][22]: The temperature probe used had an outer diameter of 0.34 mm (thermocouple type K, thermoelectric wire consisting of Chromel® and Alumel® Thermocoax, Suresnes, France; technical temperature range, −200°C to +800°C). The actual response time in nonmoving air is 0.4 s, in high-velocity air 0.1 s. The thermocouple was attached to the suction probe for humidity detection.…”

“…Excessive resection of the inferior turbinate leads to a significant reduction in heating and humidification of inhaled air [8][9][10]. Nasal air conditioning is more influenced by medial than inferior resection of the turbinate.…”
