Impact of two mycotoxins deoxynivalenol and fumonisin on pig intestinal health

Abstract: Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of fungi that grow on a variety of substrates. Due to their high consumption of cereals and their sensitivity, pigs are highly impacted by the presence of mycotoxins. At the European level, regulations and recommendations exist for several mycotoxins in pig feed. Among these toxins, fumonisin B1 (FB1), and deoxynivalenol (DON) have a great impact on the intestine and the immune system. Indeed, the intestine is the first barrier to food contaminants and can be exposed to hig… Show more

“…Similarly, NF‐κB is also a key transcription factor family that is involved in various physiological processes, particularly the inflammatory responses in DON‐induced IPEC‐J2 cells (Pires, Silva, Ferreira, & Abdelhay, 2018). In this study, DON exposure for 6 hours markedly increased the mRNA expressions of IL‐6, IL‐8, TNF‐α, COX‐2 and NF‐κB, which was consistent with a previous study (Pierron, Alassane‐Kpembi, & Oswald, 2016). The upregulation of NF‐κB gene indicated that DON exposure might induce inflammation through activation of the NF‐κB pathway.…”

“…Triticale is used for both animal feed and bioenergy production, durum wheat for pasta production and bread wheat mainly for bread making and feeding livestock. New wheat varieties can be registered in Germany only if they are at least moderately resistant to FHB infection (Miedaner, Schulthess, Gowda, Reif, & Longin, ) because the Fusarium mycotoxins produced in grains pose serious health problems to humans and animals when ingested (Pierron, Alassane‐Kpembi, & Oswald, ).…”

“…The intestinal immunity function and the structure of the intestinal tissue can be interfered by these intestinal damage (Li, Schwacha, Chaudry, & Choudhry, ). Finally, it reduces the absorption and digestion of nutrients and reduces the porcine growth performance (Pierron, Alassane‐Kpembi, & Oswald, ; Pohl et al, ). In this study, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and lipid peroxide malondialdehyde (MDA) from LFBC and SFBC diets did not significantly differ from FM in jejunum and plasma of weaned piglets.…”
