Impact of Trust, Commitment, and Openness on Research Project Performance: Case Study in a Research Institute

Abstract: This study focuses on three important shared values-trust, openness, and commitment-and examines the impact of these values on project performance and outcomes, specifically for science and innovation research projects. To this end, 12 in-depth interviews were conducted with researchers, research managers, and research leaders at the largest research institution in Scandinavia. The findings indicate that the three values (trust, openness, and commitment) are practiced at this research institution and are essen… Show more

“…Numerous studies have explored the relationship between transformational leadership and project success (e.g., Iqbal, Khan, & Sang, 2015;Frimpong, Hongyi, & Nubuor, 2014), and the known effect of the commitment to project outcomes (Korzaan, 2009;Ghazinejad, Hussein, & Zidane, 2018;Pham, Nguyen, Tu, Pham, & Le, 2019). However, there is no evidence yet on the moderation role of project managers' commitment to project success.…”

“…Researchers cooperate in networks of various structures (Clemente-Gallardo et al 2019), which are largely independent of the research institution in which they are placed. An important feature of teams on research projects is the mentality of the research workers; given the way they are evaluated (to a large extent based on bibliometric indicators), they compete with their colleagues (Betta et al 2017;Garcia and Sanz-Menéndez 2004), and are often more focused on their personal goals than on those of the project as a whole, which often makes team work and project implementation difficult (Ghazinejad et al 2018). This fact also means that research projects are always, to a certain degree, autonomous, and thus have to be able to define their success criteria and strategy while taking into account the policy of the parent organization, e.g., the public university.…”

“…Results from social research (Section 2) show that psychological safety and openness can positively affect a team's ideation process in the long run. Potential use cases are student projects, research projects, surgical teams or other work groups, where these psychological factors strongly influence project success and the team's motivation and efficiency [5][6][7]. The main research question then becomes:…”

“…Together, they create a state of openness where people can freely communicate their thoughts. Here we understand openness as a transparency in sharing task-relevant information, which facilitates the alignment of goals and expectations within the team [5]. To reach this state, the members should not encounter problems communicating and sharing information with one another, "breaking the ice" of the communication barrier [10].…”
