Impact of the Spacer on the Condensing Effect of Fluorinated Chains Investigated by Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction on Ultrathin Langmuir Monolayers

Abstract: Langmuir monolayers of double perfluoroalkyl(alkyl) chain amphiphiles fitted with a monomorpholinophosphate polar head, [C(n)F(2n+1)(CH(2))(m)O](2)P(O)[N(CH(2)CH(2))(2)O] (di(FnHm)MP with n = 6, 8, or 9; and m = 1 or 2), were investigated by surface pressure (π)/molecular area (A(0)) compression isotherms for temperatures ranging from 15 to 50 °C, and by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) at 25 °C. Ultrathin monolayers were obtained for these short surfactants. Though the hydrocarbon spacer is short, i… Show more

“…Thus, increasing F-chain length from 6 to 8 in [C n F 2n+1 (CH 2 ) m O] 2 P(O)N(CH 2 CH 2 ) 2 O causes a transition from a liquid-expanded to a more ordered liquid-condensed phase to appear ( Fig. 9) (Giulieri et al, 2012). For a given chain length, increasing fluorination from an 8:2 to 9:1 CF 2 to CH 2 ratio results in further densification and crystallinity of the monolayer and total disappearance of the liquid-expanded phase.…”

“…The monolayer of (c) is in a liquid expanded state throughout compression, whilst that of (a) is in a liquid condensed state. The monolayer of (b) exhibits a transition from a liquid expanded to a liquid condensed phase (Giulieri et al, 2012). proved useful for mesoporous materials synthesis (Xiao, 2005;Hawley et al, 2011;Pottage et al, 2014).…”

“…They also verified that the average concentration of gauche configurations decreased from 3.5 to 0.5% when changing the surfactant from C 7 F 15 C 4 H 6 COOH to C 10 F 21 CH 2 COOH. 12 When more and more CF 2 groups were replaced with CH 2 groups, the increased number of gauche configurations would be formed in the surfactant system and the structure of the surfactant at the air/water interface becomes disordered. In conclusion, the disordered arrangement of surfactant chains would be hindered by introducing fluorinated chains and facilitated by a hydrocarbon spacer because the gauche configuration mainly resulted from hydrocarbon groups.…”
