Impact of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram on insulin sensitivity, leptin and basal cortisol secretion in depressed and non-depressed euglycemic women of reproductive age

Abstract: . Insulin sensitivity in moderately depressed women of reproductive age does not differ from that in a similar group of non-depressed women. Insulin sensitivity, cortisol secretion and leptin production do not change significantly in depressed women following an 8-week course of citalopram despite substantial improvement in depression scores.

“…In the present study, in line with several studies [Deuschle et al 1996;Moosa et al 2003;Kauffman et al 2005], there was no significant difference in serum leptin levels between the MDD patients and controls. No relation was found between leptin levels and severity of depression, suicidality and recurrence of depressive episodes.…”

“…Available information about the role of leptin signalling in human depression is limited and controversial. Leptin levels were reported as decreased [Kraus et al 2001;Jow et al 2006, Yang et al 2007, and as unchanged [Deuschle et al 1996;Moosa et al 2003;Kauffman et al 2005], in patients with depression. There are also studies reporting that leptin levels were increased only in women with depression [Antonijevic et al 1998;Rubin et al 2002;Esel et al 2005;Pasco et al 2008].…”

“…These tend to be in small, highly selected clinical samples of depression; one study reported that insulin sensitivity improved following treatment with antidepressants [21], while another study observed no effect of citalopram on change in insulin sensitivity [22].…”

“…In some studies, SSRIs cause obesity and hypercholesterolemia, whereas in others, SSRIs have been reported to exert no or even positive metabolic effects (1,38,56). To assess whether the metabolic changes observed in the SSRI-LBW rats could represent a direct drug effect independent of the HPA axis and LBW, a pilot study was performed to determine the effects of ESC in the Cx rats.…”
