Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L'Herit ex Ait.) plants infected with root rot and wilt diseases were collected from different locations of Behira, Ismailia and Minia Governorates, Egypt. Fusarium, Macrophomina, Rhizoctonia and Pythium were isolated from the infected plants. The results showed that F. oxysporum recorded the highest isolated rate, followed by R. solani, F. solani, M. phaseolina and Pythium sp. The effect of various concentrations of marjoram and peppermint essential oils on the mycelial growth of the isolated fungi was tested in vitro. Marjoram and peppermint oils completely inhibited the growth of F. oxysporum, F. solani, R. solani and Pythium sp. at the concentration of 5 ml/l. A Field experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Agricultural Research Station, Malawy, Minia Governorate, Egypt, during two successive seasons of 2020 and 2021 to study the effect of different weed control methods (un-weeded control, clover cover yield, hand hoeing and black plastic mulch) on weeds biomass. The results indicated that all weed control treatments significantly decreased the weight of grassy broad-leaf weeds and total weeds compared to the un-weeded control. Moreover, all weed control treatments and plants treated with the essential oils of marjoram and peppermint as well as the biocides (Bacillus subtilis and Trichoderma harzianum) significantly decreased the wilt disease incidence and improved the vegetative growth, yield and volatile oil of geranium plants. The results indicated that plastic mulch was the most effective in reducing wilt incidence as well as increasing all growth characteristics and productivity of volatile oil, while the highest disease incidence and the lowest growth and yield were recorded under un-weeded treatment. The application of the marjoram essential oil or biocide B. subtilis resulted in the lowest incidence of wilt disease and the highest increase in the growth, herb yield, essential oil yield and main components of essential oil. The highest growth characters and volatile oil were recorded with either black plastic mulch and marjoram essential oil or with B. subtilis treatment.

The study was carried out at Lamahi-8, Satbariya, Dang to evaluate the effect of different weed management practices on the production of spring maize. The experiment was carried out in a Randomized Complete Block Design using three replications and seven treatments. Rampur hybrid 10 variety and early post emergence (EPoE) herbicide were used in the experiment. The treatment consisted of single as well as combined weed management methods as T1: Broadcasting-One hand weeding, T2: Broadcasting-Herbicide, T3: Line sown- One hand weeding, T4: Line sown-Herbicide + one hand weeding, T5: Line sown- Mini tiller weeder, T6: Line sown- herbicide + mini tiller and T7: Line sown- One hand weeding + mini tiller. The experiment result showed that the combined application of early post emergence herbicide and mini tiller resulted the highest grain yield (8.62 Mt/ha) with minimum total weed density at 60 DAS (41.33/m2) and at harvest (68/m2) thus resulting minimum weed dry weight at 60 DAS (5.45 g/m2) and at harvest (10.64 g/m2). Sixteen different weed species belonging to 9 different families were identified in the experimental field. The highest benefit: cost (3.37) was obtained in the treatment Line sown-Herbicide + mini tiller weeder which was significantly higher compared to other treatments. Among the treatments applied, one with the application of herbicide in combination with mini tiller weeder was found to be the most effective one that resulted in the minimum weed density and minimum dry weight, higher grain and biological yield with the highest benefit cost ratio thus proving to be the most economical one. At the same time, application of mini tiller weeder as a single method was found to be the next better alternative for weed control in spring maize that could benefit the farmers in comparison to other single weed management practices.

A two-year (2017 and 2018) field trials was conducted in the School of Agriculture, Njala University, Sierra Leone, to evaluate weed management practices on weed dynamics and productivity of maize. The experimental trials were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatment combinations comprised of weedy check (Control), two hoe weeding at 4 and 8 weeks after planting (WAP), Double force ® at 4 L ha -1 plus one hoe weeding at 8 WAP, Gliricidia sepium leaves mulch at 40 kg m -2 plus one hoe weeding at 8 WAP, weed-free check and Atrazine 500 SC at 3 L ha -1 plus one hoe weeding at 8 WAP. The results showed that growth and yield physiognomies differ significantly (P<0.05) among weed control practices across both years. The weed-free check treatment recorded the highest growth and yield physiognomies with respect to reduced weed density and increased weed control efficiency followed by herbicidal treatments, while weedy check had the lowest growth and yield attributes across both years. Nonetheless weed-free check required lot of labour force which was not economical to the farmer's point of judgment. Thus, Double force ® at 4 L ha -1 plus one hoe weeding at 8 WAP proved to be better in controlling weeds, increasing crop yield and economical compared with other weed management practices. Hence Double force ® at 4 L ha -1 plus one hoe weeding at 8 WAP was recommended as a pre-emergence herbicide in maize production for effective and environmentally friendly weed control method.
