Damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) is one of the most high-value essential oil-bearing plants in the world. However, the flower yield and quality of essential oil of R. damascena are largely influenced by the pruning practices and balanced supply of plant nutrition. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis whether the pruning system and foliar fertilization of MgSO4 would influence the flower yield, growth and secondary metabolites profile of R. damascena. A field experiment of 10 treatment combinations comprising two pruning systems (complete and partial) and five levels of MgSO4 (water spray, MgSO4 @ 5.0g L-1, 10.0g L-1,15.0g L-1, and 20.0g L-1) was conducted. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with factorial arrangement. Overall, the flower yield ranged from 503.66 to 1114.47 g bush-1, while oil content varied from 0.039 to 0.046% of the fresh flower. Irrespective of foliar spray, partial pruning produced significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher flower yield (893.02 and 503.66 g bush-1) compared with complete pruning system in both the years. Regardless of pruning system, the foliar application of MgSO4 @ 15.0g L-1 registered about 26–38% higher flower yield compared with water spray control. The major constituents of essential oil were citronellol (19.75–48.88%), E-geraniol (9.63–29.6%), Z-citral (0.07–5.97%), nonadecane (6.76–22.32%), and heneicosane (2.87–10.21%). The principal component analysis revealed that the major hydrocarbons such as nonadecene, nonadecane, and heptadecane are positively and highly correlated with each others. The results suggest that higher yield and quality of R. damascena can be achieved through partial pruning system in combination with foliar application MgSO4 under rainfed acidic conditions.

Fertilization plays an irreplaceable role in raising crop yields; however, there are issues with unnecessary and blind use of chemical fertilizers, which raise the risk of contamination in the atmosphere. It is hypothesized that fertilization of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) will together improve the essential oil (EO) yield and composition of Tagetes minuta L. Thus, 2 years field experiment were carried out to evaluate the outcomes of N (0, 60, 90, and 120 kg ha–1) and S levels (0, 20, 40, and 60 kg ha–1) on T. minuta during 2018 and 2019. The growth, biomass, EO content and composition were influenced (P = 0.05) by N and S fertilization. N at 120 kg ha–1 and S at 60 kg ha–1 registered higher biomass (183.89 and 178.90 q ha–1, respectively) and EO yield (102.09 and 88.60 kg ha–1, respectively), than control. Stomatal density reduced significantly with increase of N and S levels, however, density of oil glands substantially increased with S at 40 and 60 kg ha–1. The major component of EO (Z-β-ocimene) significantly increased with 120 kg N ha–1 (42.59%) and 60 kg S ha–1 (42.35%), respectively. Available nutrients in soil and plant tissues substantially increased with N and S fertilization upto 120 and 60 kg ha–1, respectively. The highest nutrient use efficiency traits were recorded at 60 kg N ha–1 and 20 kg S ha–1. It was concluded that 120 kg N ha–1 and 40 kg S ha–1 can be proposed for T. minuta as a result of agronomic responses, which serves as a sustainable means of cropping.

To investigate the effect of different types of nitrogen fertilization the growth and productivity of thyme within reducing the harm effects of the excess of nitrogen fertilizers as an environmental and healthy problems, two successive experiments were carried out in pots during 2016, 2017 season's at the experimental green house Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University Cairo , Egypt. Three types of nitrogen fertilizers amonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and Urea, with three concentrations (40%, 60%, 80%) were used. Data showed an increase in number of lateral branches, plant height and amino acids with 40 units of ammonium nitrate, while the best effect to reduce NO 3 , NO 2 as a lowest value was 40 units of ammonium sulphate. The highest value of herb fresh weight was recorded by 40 units of urea, (42:48 g / plant) while herb dry weight (18:54 g/ plant) by 40 units of ammonium sulphate, volatile oil (0.92 % v/ w) with 60 units of ammonium nitrate , amino acid (3.71 g / 100 g fw) with 80 units of urea.
