Impact of stress urinary incontinence and overactive bladder on micturition patterns and health-related quality of life

Abstract: We examined the impact of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and overactive bladder (OAB) on micturition habits and health-related quality of life (QOL). A total of 250 Korean women were included in the study. The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form (SF-36) and the King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) were used to assess QOL in the patient (SUI, n=158 and OAB, n=92) and control (n=70) groups. A control group was recruited at the Health Promotion Center of our hospital. Each of the dimension scores in the SF-36 repre… Show more

“…In addition, some of the QOL instruments used in this research (most notably the SF-12 summary scores) may not be sufficiently sensitive to detect true differences in QOL impact of UI by type or severity. 24 Finally, the number of women with stress and urge incontinence in this study limits the power of our conclusions with respect to this subanalysis.…”

These 2 conditions were often coincident in this population: 52.7% of the women with FI also had UI.…”

“…In UUI, loss of urine is unpredictable, in contrast to SUI [3]. Patients with OAB have more sleep and energy disturbances than those with SUI [20].…”

“…It is possible that SUI may be more easily prevented by avoidance of physical exertion, whereas less potential exists for volitional control over incontinence caused by involuntary detrusor contraction [3,20].…”

“…Furthermore, it has been reported by many authors that LUTS impair quality of life (QoL) [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Generic QoL questionnaires such as the Short-Form-36 or the WHO QoL SurveyAbbreviated Version, or health-related QoL (HRQoL) such as King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ), Incontinence Impact Questionnaire or Incontinence QoL have been used to assess the relationship between LUTS and QoL.…”
