Impact of smoking on the eradication of Helicobacter pylori

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infects nearly half of the global population and is recognized as one of the most common chronic bacterial infections worldwide. 1 Research on H. pylori has shown that it is not only a risk factor for digestive diseases, such as gastrointestinal ulcer, chronic gastritis, and gastric cancer, but also exerts a certain influence on various extra-digestive diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases. 2 Studies have also shown that er… Show more

“…It seemed that the previous use of amoxicillin and smoking might influence the eradication efficacy, but not statistically (Table 1). A recent meta‐analysis showed that although smoking increases the failure rate of H. pylori eradication treatment, however, when vonoprazan is used to treat the H. pylori infection, smoking has no effect on the eradication rate 24 . Although it inclined the more times the patients had failed, the less possibility they succeeded in VA dual therapy, previous failure times did not influence the efficacy of rescue treatment statistically (Figure 1).…”

“…Furthermore, we did not have accurate information on Hp status for a large part of the subjects included in the analysis, which prevented us from adjusting the analysis for this important risk factor of both PUD and GC. Although Hp infection does not appear to be associated with tobacco smoking,49 its persistence may be50 suggesting that some residual confounding on the role of PUD as mediator of the carcinogenic effect of tobacco smoking cannot be excluded. Next, we pooled data of studies conducted in a large time frame (1985–2012), entailing some heterogeneity in diagnostic criteria for both PUD and GC.…”

“… 37 Other factors such as adherence to treatment, cigarette smoking and genetic factors, also played a role. 38 39 These factors should be further explored in future investigations.…”
