Impact of Sleepiness and Sleep Deficiency on Public Health—Utility of Biomarkers

Abstract: Sleep disorders and sleep deficiency are important causes of adverse health effects and increased mortality in the United States and worldwide. Sleep deficiency can also result in myriad adverse behavioral consequences, including profound sleepiness, cognitive slowing, automatic behavior, attentional failures and performance degradation, errors, and accidents. It is important to recognize that sleepiness and sleep deficiency are not synonymous.

“…The fact that sleep-wake disruptions occur during confinement and isolation in some individuals more than others is consistent with increasing evidence that there are phenotypic and genotypic differences in vulnerability to both alterations of sleep and the resulting neurobehavioral consequences (31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37). This differential vulnerability has led to a search for predictive biomarkers of the effects of sleep loss (38), which would be useful for managing sleep-wake regulation during exploration spaceflight (39).…”

“…They also set forth a challenge to develop an understanding of the mechanisms of the threat posed by sleep deficiency to health. 22 Sleep deficiency, as defined by Czeisler 23 is ''a deficit in the quantity or quality of sleep obtained versus the amount needed for optimal health, performance, and well being.'' Buxton and colleagues proposed specific sleep variables they believed best reflected this concept.…”

“…4,5,17,18 In the 3rd edition of the International Classifi cation of Sleep Disorders (ICSD-3), 19 insuffi cient sleep syndrome (ISS) was classifi ed as one of the central hyposomnolence disorders characterized by longer sleep durations on weekends BRIEF SUMMARY Current Knowledge/Study Rationale: Insuffi cient sleep syndrome (ISS) in young adults has become a problematic issue in modern Japanese society; however, neither the prevalence nor factors associated with the disorder have been completely examined. Sleep-wake pattern as well as sleep duration is associated with depression, hence it was hypothesized that habitual sleep pattern would have an impact on daytime function in ISS-affected persons.…”
