Abstract: Physiology and behavior are structured temporally to anticipate daily cycles of light and dark, ensuring fitness and survival. Neuromodulatory systems in the brain—including those involving serotonin and dopamine—exhibit daily oscillations in neural activity and help shape circadian rhythms.
