Impact of Revised Time of Use Tariff on Variable Renewable Energy Curtailment on Jeju Island

Abstract: Jeju Island announced the “Carbon Free Island (CFI) Plan by 2030” in 2012. This plan aims to replace conventional generators with distributed energy resources (DERs) up to a level of 70% by 2030. Akin to Jeju Island, as DERs have been expanded in islanded power systems, variable renewable energy (VRE) has become a significant component of DERs. However, VRE curtailment can occur to meet power balance, and VRE curtailment generally causes energy waste and low efficiency, so it should be minimized. This paper fi… Show more

“…After this, if overvoltage still occurs, the PV is curtailed to bring the voltage back down to the reference voltage level, as outlined in Equation (38). Fourth, the day-ahead curtailment requirement of offline control PVs is computed using the forecasted output and curtailment to alleviate voltage to the reference level in each scenario, and it is expressed as in Equation (39). Finally, optimal operation with dayahead curtailment is implemented to consider renewable energy uncertainty [39].…”

“…Jeju self-governing province is promoting the expansion of renewable energy by conducting the "Carbon Free Island Jeju 2030" project, which is a low carbon green growth model to cope with climate change as well as to establish zero net energy island (Lee et al, 2021;Mun et al, 2021). Although the installed capacities of solar and wind energy are 130 MW and 270 MW, which is account for 60.7% of the total electricity demand of Jeju, their annual utilization rates are only 23% and 13%, respectively due to unstable weather conditions (Ko et al, 2019).…”
