Impact of Respiratory Virus Infections on Persons With Chronic Underlying Conditions

Abstract: Our study suggests that respiratory virus infections commonly trigger serious acute respiratory conditions that result in hospitalization of patients with chronic underlying conditions, highlighting the need for development of effective vaccines for these viruses, especially for parainfluenza and RSV.

“…In children the majority of illness are upper respiratory, but 15% of cases are associated with lower respiratory tract disease (30). Although clinical manifestations are primarily those of an upper respiratory tract infection in immunocompetent adults, increasing data suggest that this pathogen causes lower respiratory tract infection in this population (6,7). Data from early and recent studies in adult lung transplant recipients suggest that parainfluenza virus infection in these patients involves the lower respiratory tract between 10-66% of cases (10)(11)(12)(13)(14).…”

“…In adults these infections are usually mild and restricted to the upper respiratory tract (5). However, recent studies of the viral etiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections in adults indicate that parainfluenza virus accounts for 2.5 to 11.5% of hospitalized adult patients (6,7). In addition, these studies indicate that parainfluenza virus is an important pathogen in all age groups.…”

“…4,7,10 In Brazil, data from the Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (Mortality Information System) indicates the growing importance of hospital admissions and deaths due to respiratory diseases among the elderly, even considering the ageing of the population. 6 In 1995, in São Paulo State, the proportional rate of mortality due to pneumonia among persons older than 70 years was 9%, with a specific mortality of 594.03 per 100,000 population.…”

“…20 Anatomically, preterm infants have smaller and histologically immature airways, increasing vulnerability to respiratory pathogens. [21][22][23] Treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a common neonatal morbidity, may include steroids that further depress the antibody titer response to pertussis infection. 24 Strategies for reduction of pertussis in neonates Based on this information, the 2006 immunization schedule includes administration of a single booster dose of tetanus and acellular pertussis (Tdap) universally for adolescents 11 and 12 years of age.…”
