Impact of Reliability in Conceptual Design—An Illustrative Trade-Off Analysis

Abstract: System reliability is treated as a parameter and not modeled in the early concept design stages. We illustrate a reliability model for system reliability in early concept design using knowledge from similar systems, technology readiness levels (TRL), and functional analysis methods using an unmanned ground vehicle. We integrate the reliability model with performance and cost models to demonstrate the impact of reliability in early concept design. The resultant tradespace comparison with and without early relia… Show more

“…As the preceding discussion described, applying a model-based and coupled simulation approach to reliability analysis enables a rigorous and data-based assessment earlier in the system architecture lifecycle than traditional methods. And, in contrast to the function-based approaches collected by Barker et al (2022), the coupled simulation methodology leverages existing system definitionsthe model-based architectureand provides flexibility to assess systems at both the functional and physical layers of abstraction. This is achieved via the flexibility of the ModelCenter simulation broker, which can link detailed simulation elements, like the hazard functions used in this example, or more generic function probabilities such as those proposed by methods in Barker et al…”

“…However, difficulty exists in their application early in system design due to a failure-based perspective, which requires detailed element definition to identify possible system and element faults (Kurtoglu & Tumer 2008). To address this shortcoming, alternative approaches using a function-based perspective are proposed, with Barker et al (2022) providing a comprehensive literature summary. The function-based methods proposed and cited by Barker, including those of Kurtoglu and Tumer, Short et al (2018), Jing et al (2020), andAugustine et al (2012), quantify system reliability in terms of the functions, or behaviors, the elements provide.…”

“…However, designing a system that meets reliability requirements is an iterative optimization process that requires the cooperation of the system design specialist and reliability specialist [31,32], see Figure 1. Specifically, after the system design specialist completes the functional design, the reliability specialist needs to build a system reliability model based on the system function architecture and perform a reliability evaluation.…”
