Impact of range shifter material on proton pencil beam spot characteristics

Abstract: Purpose: To quantitatively investigate the effect of range shifter materials on single-spot characteristics of a proton pencil beam. Methods: An analytic approximation for multiple Coulomb scattering ("differential Moliere" formula) was adopted to calculate spot sizes of proton spot scanning beams impinging on a range shifter. The calculations cover a range of delivery parameters: six range shifter materials (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, Lexan, Lucite, polyethylene, polystyrene, and wax) and water as refer… Show more

“…b Normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) model for parotid salivary flow (solid curve). The NTCP value denotes the probability of a reduction in salivary flow to < 25% of the pretreatment flow at ≤6 months after radiotherapy scattering from the RS, which increases spot size when entering the patient's body and thus degrades the treatment plan quality due to the larger lateral penumbra [35][36][37]. There are numerous publications to address the clearance issues as well as proton beam modeling and dosimetric plan quality challenges of using RS [38,39].…”

“…We believe that with a well validated Monte Carlo platform, use of Monte Carlo calculated dose profile can provide an alternative and efficient method for TPS/range shifter commissioning. A Monte Carlo based method would be particularly valuable and convenient if a multi‐thickness range shifter with different materials is used 42, 43, 44…”

“…Due to technical challenges, current clinical PBS systems cannot provide protons with energies below 70 MeV [3]. This limits the ability to treat shallow tumors (<4 cm) unless a range shifter (RS) is added at the end of the nozzle.…”
