Impact of primary to secondary care data sharing on care quality in NHS England hospitals

Abstract: Health information exchange (HIE) is seen as a key component of effective care but remains poorly evidenced at a health system level. In the UK National Health Service (NHS), the ability to share primary care data with secondary care clinicians is a focus of continued digital investment. In this study, we report the evolution of interoperable technology across a period of rapid digital transformation in NHS England from 2015 to 2019, and test association of primary to secondary care data-sharing capabilities w… Show more

“…Taking into account the need to fulfill these four principles, our group regards the proof of methodological development in the fulfillment of system interoperability, which is not always addressed by the majority of deep learning models published in Gastroenterology. Thus, the interoperability challenge is a discussion topic in multiple science fields [ 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Our group has addressed that concern, developing a CNN that works in three different enteroscopes, comprising single-balloon, double-balloon and motorized spiral enteroscopy devices, solving a fundamental interoperability challenge for applying the technology.…”

“…Since EHR-derived data contains large volumes of categorical data, such as patient demographic, diagnostic, and treatmentrelated information, validity constraints are needed to identify areas needing standardisation [39,40]. Data standardisation has been shown to correlate positively to data sharing capabilities and emergency care [41]. However, improper design of standardised data entry user interfaces, such as the use of excessively long drop-down lists for diagnostic codes, can also increase cognitive demand, lower workflow efficiency, and correlate to clinician burnout [42].…”

“…This is one piece of evidence that confirms that improvement in data-sharing capacities can bring benefits in the quality and service in healthcare systems. 9 Some of the latest technological advancements that are based on sharing health data and their reuse can be seen in the example of digital twins. Digital twins represent a digital model or replication of physical entities—for example, it can be a virtual replica of human organs, tissues, cells that is used for predicting corresponding future scenarios.…”
