Efficacy of Pharmacist Based Diabetes Educational Interventions on Clinical Outcomes of Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Network Meta-Analysis

Background: Comparative efficacy of different pharmacist based interventions on glycemic control of type 2 diabetes patients is unclear. This review aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of different pharmacist based interventions on clinical outcomes of type 2 diabetes patients.Methods: A systematic search was conducted across five databases from date of database inception to September 2017. All randomized clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of pharmacist based interventions on type 2 diabetes patients were included for network meta-analysis (NMA). The protocol is available with PROSPERO (CRD42017078854).Results: A total of 43 studies, involving 6259 type 2 diabetes patients, were included. NMA demonstrated that all interventions significantly lowered glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels compared to usual care, but there was no statistical evidence from this study that one intervention was significantly better than the other for reducing HbA1c levels. Pharmacist based diabetes education plus pharmaceutical care showed maximum efficacy for reducing HbA1c levels [−0.86, 95% CI −0.983, −0.727; p < 0.001]. Pharmacist based diabetes education plus pharmaceutical care was observed to be statistically significant in lowering levels of systolic blood pressure [−4.94; 95%CI −8.65, −1.23] and triglycerides levels [−0.26, 95%CI −0.51, −0.01], as compared to the interventions which involved diabetes education by pharmacist, and for body mass index (BMI) [−0.57; 95%CI −1.25, −0.12] in comparison to diabetes education by health care team involving pharmacist as member.Conclusion: The findings of this review demonstrate that all interventions had a significantly positive effect on HbA1c, but there was no statistical evidence from this study that one intervention was significantly better than the other for achieving glycemic control.Pharmacist based diabetes education plus pharmaceutical care showed maximum efficacy on HbA1c and rest of the clinical outcomes.

Engaging Pharmacy Students in Research Through Near-Peer Training

Objective. To describe the implementation of a near-peer training model within a student research program. Methods. A near-peer training model was implemented in a pharmacy student research program to promote development of effective teaching skills and research competencies. Under the supervision of a research mentor, senior learners precepted junior learners in various aspects of translational research. A three-step teaching process was employed throughout the experience in which junior learners performed an assigned task, senior learners provided guidance and mentorship, and research mentors provided feedback for improvement. Results. A total of 43 pharmacy trainees have participated in the student research program; each year of involvement now averages 15 to 18 students. The program has been responsible for almost 100 poster presentations at national meetings and more than 20 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. Funding through intramural grants and scholarships to compensate for conference expenses and other functions has also been awarded. Conclusion. Near-peer teaching supports a tiered-research model under the supervision of a research mentor. For health care systems and colleges of pharmacy with established research programs or those seeking to implement new programs, near-peer teaching appears to be a promising strategy to promote the development of research competencies in pharmacist trainees.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease affecting multiple organ systems leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Objectives:To assess the impact of pharmacist led interventions in the quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods:A prospective, interventional study carried over a period of 12 months from October 2014 -September 2015 in general medicine outpatient department of a tertiary care teaching hospital. A total of 106 Patients who fulfilled the study criteria were randomized into intervention group (55 patients) and usual care groups (51 patients) and completed the study. Patient information leaflet and medication counselling was provided to intervention group by the clinical pharmacist. Quality of life scores were collected by using Audit of diabetes dependent quality of life questionnaire to both the groups at the beginning and at the end of the study. In a group of 30 patients in the intervention group glycosylated haemoglobin was recorded at baseline and final follow up. These quality of life scores and glycaemic levels (fasting plasma glucose and post prandial plasma glucose) were obtained and compared between both groups at the end of the study. Results:The intervention group showed an improvement in the quality of life score from -2.69±1.53 at the baseline to -1.92±0.59 at the final visit (p<0.05). The average HbA1c values decreased from 9.15± 1.37 to 7.21± 0.844 in the intervention group (p<0.05). There was a significant decrease in the post prandial blood glucose from 260.30± 93.43 to 165.19± 33.44 and fasting blood glucose from 163.45 ± 56.03 to 114.45± 18.87 from the baseline value to the final follow up in the intervention group (p<0.05). Conclusion:The study shows that clinical pharmacist guided appropriate interventions were found to be effective in achieving better glycaemic control and better quality of life in patients with diabetes mellitus.
