Impact of Pedagogical Method on Brazilian Dental Students’ Waste Management Practice

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative analysis of waste management practices among a group of Brazilian dental students (n=64) before and after implementing two different pedagogical methods: 1) the students attended a twohour lecture based on World Health Organization standards; and 2) the students applied the lessons learned in an organized group setting aimed toward raising their awareness about socioenvironmental issues related to waste. All eligible students participated, and the students… Show more

“…Furthermore, in developing countries, dental education on infection control lags behind internationally established standards and recommendations by more than 10 years 7 . Regardless, it is necessary to find pedagogical alternatives to teach knowledge, skills, and attitudes in occupational health, biosafety, and infection control that efficiently impact the clinical activity of students during their professional training 8 …”

“…However, the knowledge and awareness of adequate MW management remain poor due to the lack of appropriate training for both doctors and hospital staff, although this is a necessity today [26,27]. A study conducted among Brazilian dental students proved that theoretical knowledge on waste managements can be improved, but this may not amend waste segregation and adequate disposal in dental practice [28]. In our study, students show a very positive attitude towards continuing training on MW management and investigations on this topic.…”
