Impact of Parkinson’s disease on the acute care treatment and medium-term functional outcome in geriatric hip fracture patients

Abstract: PD on hospital admission is not an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality or an inferior functional outcome at hospital discharge. However, patients with PD are at risk for specific complications and longer hospitalization at the time of transfer from acute care so as for reduced abilities in activities of daily living in the medium term.

“…To prevent these patients from acquiring secondary damages, such as pressure sores or pulmonary infection, immediate full weight‐bearing mobilization is targeted. Nevertheless, mobilization often remains difficult, because of these patients’ pre‐existing comorbidities and unsteadiness of gait . The perioperative use of indwelling urinary catheters has become routine practice in orthopedic and trauma surgery wards to enable improved care of these immobile patients .…”

“…This is a novel finding. It has been found that patients with PD recover more slowly from a hip fracture, but in previous studies heightened risk for surgical complications has not been noted [33][34][35][36]. However, these single-center studies included relatively low numbers of PD patients.…”

“…Patients with Parkinson's have at least twice the mortality after hip fracture (7,8) with more complications and longer hospital stays. (9) Stroke There are 750,000 cases of stroke per year in the US and 110,000 in England. (10) In a meta-analysis of 11 studies, the risk of hip fracture was increased after a stroke (relative risk [RR] ¼ 2.06, 95% CI 1.68 to 2.52).…”
