Impact of Nutrients on the Hoof Health in Cattle

Abstract: Lameness is currently one of the most important and economically demanding diseases in cattle. It is manifested in a change in locomotion that is associated with lesions, especially the pelvic limbs. The disease of the hoof is painful, affecting the welfare of dairy cows. Important factors that influence the health of the limbs include nutrition, animal hygiene, stable technology, and genetic and breeding predispositions. Nutrition is one of the basic preventive factors affecting the quality and growth of the … Show more

“…In addition, Zn deficiency in grazing cattle is likely to be rare, as the Zn concentration of most forages tend to be marginally adequate. In a survey of 23 U.S. states, Mortimer et al [28] found that pasture/range grass Zn concentrations averaged 29 ± 9.2 mg/kg with fairly consistent results across four geographic regions of the U.S. (range = 19.5 to 42.9 mg/kg Zn; n = 164 samples).…”

“…The pathogenesis of laminitis has not been fully elucidated. It is currently believed that nutrition disorder is one of the main causes [ 7 ]. The disproportion between a high share of rapidly-fermented carbohydrates and low physical effective NDF may cause impaired ruminal health through variation in the VFA concentrations and decreased ruminal fluid pH, which leads to subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) [ 8 ].…”

“…At present, there is still no effective method for the prevention and treatment of laminitis. Studies have shown that rumen modifiers like monensin can alleviate the severity of laminitis [ 7 , 12 ]. However, there are growing concerns about food safety and drug resistance.…”

“…Nutrition disorder is one of the main causes of laminitis [6]. A large intake of high-energy feed can lead to the excessive proliferation of rumen microorganisms and lactic acid production, followed with the release of histamine and endotoxins into peripheral blood, resulting in the blood vessels network damage in claw [7].…”

“…The preventive and therapeutic strategies for laminitis are concentrated on diet management. Gluconeogenic precursors and rumen modi ers like Monensin, Lasalocid were added to alleviate the severity of laminitis [6,9]. However, there are growing concerns about food safety and drug resistance.…”
