Impact of Nutrients and Suspended Particulate Matter on Phytoplankton Chlorophyll-a Biomass, in the Estuary of Kendal, Indonesia

Abstract: The Kendal River estuary receives nutrient input from various community activities from the surrounding waters and will indirectly affect the physical and biological quality parameters of the waters. Phytoplankton biomass is a parameter of biological quality, which can be measured based on the concentration of chlorophyll-a, while suspended particulate matter is a parameter of its physical quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of nutrients and suspended particulate matter… Show more

“…The abundance of phytoplankton is also supported by the presence of high nitrate and phosphate nutrients with an average concentration of 0.44 mg / l (Table 1). Nitrates and Fosphores as the most common nutrients limit phytoplankton production in marine and freshwater ecosystems [14]. The high phosphate content in the middle and outer parts of the bay may be due to currents that transport these nutrients to the waters farther from the coast.…”

“…The distribution of phytoplankton abundance at each station ranges from 1208 -3040 cells/l with the highest value found in the middle part of Lasolo Bay located at station B (Figure 6). Based on the abundance of phytoplankton, Lasolo Bay is included in the category of moderate productivity [13,14] .…”

“…Total suspended solids (TSS) concentration can provide information on water quality as well as indicates pollution level, which determines water carrying capacity (Indrayanti et al, 2022). Water quality is considered the essential factor controlling the health and state of marine conditions (Hadi et al, 2021).…”

“…As a result, as the concentration of dissolved oxygen declines, aquatic species' survival becomes challenging and perhaps dangerous. Furthermore, oil and grease found in wastewater effluents are complex and difficult to break down, and as a result, deposits on the surface of receiving waterbodies, interfere with the photosynthesis of aquatic biota by inhibiting light penetration (Oyekanmi et al, 2019;Kilian et al, 2022;Indrayanti et al, 2022;Melnyk et al, 2023). As a result, it is critical to collect well-founded information to determine the quality of water and identify the source of contamination, which aids in the successful management of water pollution in freshwater resources (Ustaoglu et al, 2020;Matiyiv et al, 2022;Ougrad et al, 2022).…”
