Impact of Naples Prognostic Score on Midterm All-Cause Mortality in Patients with Decompensated Heart Failure

Abstract: Aim: This work was designed to investigate the relationship between cardiac outcomes and Naples Prognostic Score (NPS) among heart failure (HF) patients. Materials & methods: This retrospective observational study enrolled 298 consecutive individuals hospitalized for New York Heart Association class 3–4 HF. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were rehospitalization and in-hospital death. Results: The high NPS group had a statistically greater rate of all-cause mortality (p < … Show more

“…They also reported that only the NPS was an independent predictor of overall (HR = 2.0; p = 0.03) and disease‐free survival rates (HR = 2.6; p = 0.01) 8 . Moreover, several data for the prognostic significance of the NPS in cardiovascular diseases such as acute coronary syndrome and heart failure has recently been introduced to the literature 10,18,20 . Beyond the prognostic significance of the NPS, Birdal et al 25 have recently described a relationship between the NPS and the low left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with ST‐elevation myocardial infarction.…”

“…Initially, several scores were developed related to malnutrition, which was associated with poor clinical outcomes in cancer patients 8,15,16 . Additionally, malnutrition has also been associated with mortality, morbidity, and disease severity in cardiovascular disease 6,10,13,14,17–21 . Recently, several investigators have reported that malnutrition is a predictor of worse outcomes in patients with severe AS undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement 14,22 .…”
