Impact of nanotechnology in cancer: emphasis on nanochemoprevention

Abstract: Since its advent in the field of cancer, nanotechnology has provided researchers with expertise to explore new avenues for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Utilization of nanotechnology has enabled the development of devices in nanometer (nm) sizes which could be designed to encapsulate useful agents that have shown excellent results but otherwise are generally toxic due to the doses intended for extended use. In addition, examples are also available where these devices are easily conjugate… Show more

“…Some of the nanoformulations have been approved by the FDA are currently available in the market. A detailed list of approved formulations is available [33, 35]. Among these, the albumin-bound paclitaxel (PTX) poly(lactide- co -glycolide) (PLGA) nanoformulation (Abraxane ™ , http://www.abraxane.com/dtc/) is highly successful in increasing the specificity and treatment efficiency of various cancer(s).…”

“…Consequently, development of advanced treatment modalities is needed, especially to avoid the morbidity of toxic side effects during chemotherapy. Targeted drug delivery has been an important focus of recent research, especially for cancer chemotherapy ( 30 33 ). Numerous projects have focused on selective tumor delivery of highly toxic drugs that can be transported to cancer cells and tumors without damage to normal tissues ( 34 36 ).…”

“…The main disadvantages of natural compounds are their low solubility and bioavailability, and inability to adhere to prescribed treatments. Nanotechnology is one of the new tools used for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer (Siddiqui et al, 2012). Therefore, nanotechnology offers another mode to improve the bioavailability of naturally active food ingredients.…”
