Impact of multisensory extended reality on tourism experience journey

Abstract: Purpose The use of extended reality (XR) to create memorable experiences has attracted considerable attention, especially in tourism. Multisensory XR offers a new way of virtually previewing a destination before physical holidays. This study aims to explore how multisensory XR can be used at each stage of the tourism experience journey. This study established a model for how destination-image formation is affected by multisensory XR in each phase of tourism experience. Design/methodology/approach The authors… Show more

“…The literature has previously addressed the use of multisensory cues for enriching the VR experience and delivering better experiences. Most works demonstrate that multisensory positively impacts the overall experience (Melo et al , 2020; Santoso et al , 2022). Nevertheless, the multisensory impact on the VR experience in tourism-applied VR solutions is not always significant.…”

“…Different factors can affect the VR experience, namely, technological, functional or personal (Schuemie et al , 2001). Technological factors refer to the type of VR set-ups used that can range from non-immersive screens to the fully immersive HMDs, as well as the apparatus that can deliver simple audiovisual stimuli or multisensory stimuli (Melo et al , 2020; Santoso et al , 2022). Functional factors refer to the features of the VR experience, such as the freedom to explore the environment and the interaction metaphors and freedom of action within the VE (Monteiro et al , 2021).…”

“…The present study focuses on the SExp of the tourists and residents. The SExp has been widely explored especially in neuroscience (see Libet et al ., 1993; Neville et al , 1997) and it is increasingly growing in marketing and tourism (see Agapito et al , 2013; Hultén et al , 2009; Khandelwal et al , 2020; Rahman et al , 2021; Santoso et al , 2022; Van Trijp and Schifferstein, 1995; Wiedmann et al , 2013). The characteristic of sensory is embedded in the external environment.…”

“…The third theme is based on extended reality (XR), which covers VR, AR, and mixed reality (MR). XR technology moves the human interaction into a virtual and/or hybrid mode, and the applications in hospitality situations include labour training, tourism destination simulation and commercial marketing (Chang and Chiang, 2022; Chen et al , 2022; Leung et al , 2022; Lui and Goel, 2022; Santoso et al , 2022). The fourth theme is marketing technology (MarTech) which is important in the hospitality industry and will help the firms to use social media, online reviews and other similar range of software and tools to achieve marketing goals (Zhuo and Wang, 2022).…”
