Impact of multidisciplinary team huddles on patient safety: a systematic review and proposed taxonomy

Abstract: BackgroundDespite significant advances, patient safety remains a critical public health concern. Daily huddles—discussions to identify and respond to safety risks—have been credited with enhancing safety culture in operationally complex industries including aviation and nuclear power. More recently, huddles have been endorsed as a mechanism to improve patient safety in healthcare. This review synthesises the literature related to the impact of hospital-based safety huddles.MethodsWe conducted a systematic revi… Show more

“… 28 As such, a vital component of our LTACH’s resilient work system was a central hub communication network, similar in concept to clinical daily huddles and rounds shown to be effective in providing quality patient care, but controlled centrally through the conveyance of essential information in an emergency management and incident command center design. 29 , 30 , 31 Our version of the central hub, called the virtual operational huddle (VOH), began on March 3, 2020, and served as a real-time review of the current status of hospital operations throughout the network ( Fig 2 ). The VOH included daily communication with more than 100 executive and regional senior leaders and staff in support of critical functions in hospital operations, including clinical, administrative, human resources, supply and logistics, legal, compliance, and quality.…”

“…The terms “huddle” and “briefing” are often used synonymously to describe a meeting of team members before a task is performed; such meetings have been demonstrated to improve safety-related outcomes and team performance measures 10 11 . Although these processes may already be embedded within endoscopy units, they should be adapted to the current situation in order to optimize teamworking and preserve patient safety.…”

“…means of surfacing safety issues on a regular basis. 25 Huddles are short team discussions targeted at identifying key risks, raising awareness of current problems and action planning for babies or broader challenges on the ward. These meetings can only be effective if staff feel able to speak up and openly discuss hazards and problems.…”

“…Dedicating even small amounts of time to efficient exchanges, through huddles or 15 min sit-down rounds, is an effective and relatively straightforward means of surfacing safety issues on a regular basis. 25 Huddles are short team discussions targeted at identifying key risks, raising awareness of current problems and action planning for babies or broader challenges on the ward.…”
