Impact of Multiaccess Infusion Devices on In Vitro Drug Delivery During Multi-Infusion Therapy

Abstract: Multi-infusion therapy induces perturbation in drug delivery. These perturbations (lag time, backflow, and bolus) could be reduced by using infusion sets including very low dead space volume and an ARV.

“…These results are in accordance with previous studies, including ours, demonstrating that the use of a very low deadspace infusion set with anti-reflux valve improves the accuracy of drug delivery [2][3][4]. The major advantage of the doublepump method is that it increases the sum of flow rates thanks to carrier flow, whereas a diluted drug infused alone at a high flow rate means the drug infusion pump needs frequent changing.…”

“…Previous work suggests that a common cause of drug error is syringe swapping, which occurs most often between syringes of equal size, and is not eliminated by colour-coding of labels [2]. Following a number of recent drug errors in our department, we undertook a root cause analysis to investigate the issues identified.…”

“…8 Material factors that have been identified as potential causes of drug-concentration discrepancies with syringe pumps include nonstandardized use of equipment such as tubes, valves, injectors, and syringes. [9][10][11] Documented human causes of inconsistent drug concentrations include drug mislabeling and improper manipulation of syringes. [12][13][14] Errors often found include confusion between 2 products and poor transcription of the prescription, all exacerbated by stress and fatigue.…”
