Background Providing financial risk protection is one of the fundamental goals of health systems. Catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and medical impoverishment (MI) are two common indicators in evaluating financial risk protection in health. As China continues its health system reform to provide accessible and affordable health care, it is important to have a clear understanding of China’s progress in financial risk protection. However, past research showed discrepancies in the incidence of CHE and MI. In this article, using data from four national household surveys, we analyzed levels and characteristics of CHE and MI in China under different definitions. Methods We used multiple conventional thresholds for CHE and MI to comprehensively describe the levels of financial risk protection in China. We used data from four national household surveys to measure the incidence of CHE and MI, and their inequalities by urban/rural status and by income quartiles. The Probit regression model was used to explore influencing factors of CHE and MI. Results We found that the incidences of CHE and MI were largely consistent across four national household surveys, despite different sampling methods and questionnaire designs. At the 40% nonfood expenditure threshold, the incidence of CHE in China was 14.95%-17.73% across four surveys during the period of 2016–2017. Meanwhile, at the 1.9 US dollars poverty line, the incidence of MI was 2.01%-5.63%. Moreover, rural residents, lower-income subgroups, and smaller households were faced with higher financial risks from healthcare expenditures. Although positive progress in financial risk protection has been achieved in recent years, China has disproportionately high incidences of CHE and MI, compared to other countries. Conclusion China has large margins for improvements in risk financial protection, with large inequalities across subgroups. Providing better financial protection for low-income groups in rural areas is the key to improve financial protection in China.

This study investigated the roles of security and technological factors in the adoption of smart cities, with the aim of developing a deeper understanding of the key aspects of the successful adoption of smart cities in Jordanian traditional cities. This study developed a conceptual model to investigate the importance of security and technological factors in the adoption of smart cities. The proposed model was tested using the structural equation modeling method after collecting data from ICT experts. The findings of the study revealed that perceived security, perceived trust, and service quality play pivotal roles in enhancing the adoption of smart city services. Moreover, the results indicated that information security and information privacy positively impact intentions toward adopting smart city services. These research findings provide valuable insights into the critical factors that can drive the adoption of smart city services. Policymakers and academics could utilize this knowledge to devise and implement new strategies aimed at increasing the adoption of smart city services.

Background Improving the individual’s mental health is important for sustainable economic and social development. Although some studies found that household wealth gap may affect individuals’ mental health, few studies have clarified the causal relationship between household wealth gap between mental health in China. This study examines the impact of the household wealth gap on individuals' mental health using data from the 2012–2018 China Family Panel Survey.Methods This study first used the two-way fixed effects model to investigate the impact of household wealth gap on individuals’ mental health. Considering the endogeneity, the two-stage least square and propensity score matching were employed to examine the impact of household wealth inequality on individuals' mental health.Results The results show that the household wealth gap has negative impact on individuals’ mental health. A series of robustness tests support this conclusion. The results of heterogeneity analysis show that the household wealth gap has a greater impact on the mental health of an individual with lower education levels and in rural areas. The results of the mechanism analysis suggest that the household wealth gap may affect individuals' mental health by influencing the individual’s health insurance commitment and neighborhood relations. In addition, the household wealth gap not only significantly negatively affects individuals' mental health in the short term but also in the medium- to long-term.Conclusion These findings suggest that the government should take various measures to narrow the wealth inequality between families, which may effectively improve the mental health of residents.
