Pedestrian evacuation is an important measure to ensure disaster safety in central retail districts, the efficiency of which is affected by the synergy of road network planning indices. This paper established the typical forms of central retail district (CRD) road networks in terms of block form, network structure and road grade, taking China as an example. The experiment was designed using the orthogonal design of experiment (ODOE) method and quantified the evacuation time under different road network planning indices levels through the Anylogic simulation platform. Using range and variance analysis methods, the synergy of network density, network connectivity, road type and road width on pedestrian evacuation efficiency were studied from the perspectives of significance, importance and optimal level. The results showed that the type of CRD will affect the importance of network planning indices, and that the network connectivity is insignificant (P 0.477/0.581) in synergy; networks with wide pedestrian primary roads (30.1~40.0 m), medium secondary roads (3.1~5.0 m/side) and high density (11.0~13.0 km/km2) have the highest evacuation efficiency. From the perspective of evacuees, this paper put forward urban design implications on CRD road networks to improve their capacity for disaster prevention and reduction.

Analysis of Traffic Noise Levels on Land Use in Jos Metropolis, Nigeria

Traffic noise in urban areas has always been a global issue. This study focuses on the land use analysis of traffic noise levels in the Jos Metropolis. The study was conducted in Jos Metropolis, Plateau State, Nigeria. Twenty-five (25) road corridors were sampled for the study. Measurement points were randomly selected along the road corridors. Traffic noise levels were collected using Sound Level Meter. The sound level meter was positioned at a distance of 6.5 m from the centreline of the nearest travel lane of the road and was held at about 1.5 m high from the ground level. The traffic noise levels data were collected three times a day during peak hour periods from Monday to Saturday. Noise data were measured for 15 minutes at an interval of 6 seconds in each measurement point for six days, making a total of 18 measurements per location. Data sourced from the field were analysed using Mean, Standard Deviation and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The study revealed that traffic noise levels in Jos Metropolis in the various land uses exceeded the maximum permissible noise levels recommended by WHO and FEPA. Urban road networks are lifelines for cities in fulfilling the transportation needs of their inhabitants. The Patna Urban Agglomeration Area (PUAA) lacks properly planned roads; many of them have varying widths, with encroachments that reduce effective road width. A serviceability analysis is required through a traffic survey in order to create a traffic flow profile. This profile aids in performing time-based path, elevation, and serviceability analyses. In this study, traffic data were collected using cameras at vital road junctions and signals. A manual traffic survey was conducted at locations where active traffic was observed during peak hours. The road network of the study area was created using Google Maps, digitizing roads as lines and utilities as points. The traffic survey data, the road network, and the utilities were analyzed in the Network Analyst tool of the ArcGIS software. The analyses revealed suitable routing at underpass and overpass, as well as feasible paths during peak hours and locations with poor utility access. The analysis focused on the low-income group of people who depend on public transport and utilities and are the driving force of a developing economy. Suitable solutions are suggested to improve the existing road network.
