Impact of Lavender on Pain and Anxiety Levels Associated With Spine Procedures

Abstract: Background: To reduce pain and anxiety associated with interventional pain procedures, sedation is often used, with benzodiazepines, opioids, and propofol the most commonly used classes of drugs for sedation. However, patient coherence and ability to communicate procedural pain and abnormal sensations help prevent adverse outcomes. Therefore, discovering alternative therapies to mitigate the anxiety and pain associated with these procedures and to minimize risk is important. The aim of our study was… Show more

“…However, other research examining the effect of lavender oil on state anxiety in patients undergoing colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy determined no difference in state anxiety before or after aromatherapy (Muzzarelli, Force, & Sebold, 2006). A different study investigating pain and anxiety experienced in spinal interventions reported lower pain and anxiety in a group using lavender oil, although the difference between the groups was not statistically significant (Grabnar, Roach, Abd-Elsayed, & Kim, 2021). It appears that anxiety levels have decreased in the majority of studies, albeit not significantly.…”

“…Additionally, the use of lavender oil in obese patients after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding reduced their post-operative opioid demand [15]. However, lavender oil showed no significant effect in reducing pain after open-heart surgery or spinal procedures, but it did reduce patients' anxiety levels [6,17,85]. An animal model of inflammatory and neuropathic pain provides new information on the underlying mechanisms of action of lavender oil in pain management.…”
