Development of a Model Linking Physical Asset Management to Sustainability Performance: An Empirical Research

This article is aimed at exploring the relationship between physical asset management (PAM) practices and sustainability performance. A framework of interrelated constructs was developed based on the existing literature and consequently tested through empirical study. Survey data were collected from organizations operating in six European countries (i.e., Greece, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, and Turkey) and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM). The results offer support for the proposed hypotheses, showing that PAM practices positively influence the sustainability performance outcomes, namely economic, environmental, and employee-related social performance. Overall, this study demonstrates that a PAM framework can be conceptualized by four sub-constructs, namely physical asset risk management, physical asset performance assessment, physical asset lifecycle management, and physical asset policy and strategy. Finally, this study brings to light some theoretical and managerial implications as well as directions for future research. The findings of the study underscore PAM areas in which managers should focus on in order to optimize costs, performance, and risk exposures concerning the physical assets, and therefore enhance sustainability performance.

At present, solving the problems of improving the reliability of the assets of thermal power plants (TTP) in Russian Federation is possible only as a result of the transition of equipment management systems to a fundamentally new paradigm for diagnosing operating equipment. Nevertheless, this problem constitutes one of the leading prospects the TPP industry. This paper considers the problem of the transition from asset management systems that currently exist to an innovative systemi.e. the diagnostics and information management of operating equipment parameters based on measuring the parameters of its actual state. It becomes apparent that the introduction of the fifth-generation asset management system can lead to a significant reduction in the cost of repairs, the exclusion of unreasonable repairs on a case-law basis and to the minimization of the cost of the life cycle of ownership of assets of thermal power plants.

This paper aims to assess and improve the sustainability performance at a higher educational institute (HEI) in UAE using DMAIC methodology, considering five sustainability aspects (knowledge, behaviour, concern, awareness and attitude). One primary and six secondary research questions were defined in the define phase. In the measure phase, a questionnaire was designed to measure the current sustainability level based on the five sustainability aspects. A questionnaire was distributed among campus populations and statistically analysed in the analysis phase. Participation in UI GreenMetric was used in the control phase to monitor the performance from 2018 to 2020. It was found that the communication college has the lowest sustainability level at 25% marginal error compared with other colleges. Also, students have the lowest sustainability level compared with faculty and staff at a 15% marginal error. The proposed framework can help HEI decision-makers assess their sustainability levels and suggest plans to enhance sustainability performance.
