Impact of iron deficiency anemia on cell-mediated and humoral immunity in children: A case control study

Abstract: Objective:The precise role of iron in immune regulation especially in children vulnerable to iron deficiency is not fully known. Hence, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and its treatment with oral iron supplementation on cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and humoral immunity (HMI) in children.Materials and Methods:A total of 40 children (<15 years) with IDA and 40 age-matched healthy children after satisfying the inclusion criteria were enrolled for this case-control … Show more

“…Our results showed insignificant alteration in the percentage and the absolute count of CD8 positive lymphocytes. This is in agreement with Das et al, [ 20 ] and Mullick et al, [ 21 , 22 ]. While Thibault et al, [ 23 ] found a decreased in the IL-2 production in IDA patients which was explained by alteration in CD8 positive lymphocyte maturation.…”

“…In addition, VitD in combination with the two drugs can participate in the regulation of Th1/Th2 cytokine. That will further regulate the alveolar macrophages, pulmonary epithelial cells and dendritic cells to inhibit the production of IL-4 and IL-6 cells, reducing airway inflammation and promoting the secretion of IL-2 and IFN-γ that prevents the reoccurrence of airway hyper-responsiveness ( 19 ).…”

“…Blood loss due to menstruation [ 39 ], sub-optimal nutrition and pregnancy [ 40 ] could possibly contribute to these age patterns in women. Das et al recently found that iron deficiency was associated with lower CD4 T cell counts in children in India [ 41 ]. Notably, we did not find an association of CD4 T cell counts with either RBC counts or Hgb levels.…”
