Impact of Globodera ellingtonae on yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum)

Abstract: Globodera ellingtonae was described from Oregon and Idaho in 2012. Due to the close phylogenetic relationship of this nematode to the potato cyst nematodes G. pallida and G. rostochiensis, and evidence that G. ellingtonae reproduces on potato (Solanum tuberosum), potential damaging effects to potato by this nematode are of great concern. To evaluate the pathogenic effects of G. ellingtonae on potato, five field and two microplot trials were conducted over a four-year period including comparisons of a range of … Show more

“…Generally, different species have different codon usage patterns, and genes of the same species may adopt similar codon usage strategies 57 . Species with closer phylogenetic relationships or more similar living environments might have similar codon usage patterns 58 , which might be the result of natural selection and species adaptation and widespread in organisms, reflecting some evolutionary phenomena 59 , 60 . Genes with higher codon usage bias tend to have higher expression levels 58 .…”

“…Globodera ellingtonae has been shown to have similar behaviour and requirements for hatching and development to G. rostochiensis, but shows some molecular diversity (Hesse et al, 2021). Like G. rostochiensis, G. ellingtonae is a pathogen of certain cultivars of potato but its pathogenicity has been inconsistent (Zasada et al, 2019). The inclusion of this recently discovered potato cyst nematode, G. ellingtonae, sought to characterise the nematode species further, comparing it to other members of the Globodera family.…”

“…andigena , which offers nearly complete resistance to G. rostochiensis pathotypes Ro1 and Ro4 ( Ellenby, 1952 ). More recently, it was reported that G. ellingtonae does not reproduce on potato genotypes which carry the H1 resistance locus ( Whitworth et al, 2018 ; Zasada et al, 2019 ).…”

“…It has been detected in Oregon and Idaho in the United States, and in the Andean region of South America ( Lax et al, 2014 ). However, its pathogenicity to potato is inconsistent ( Zasada et al, 2019 ).…”
