Impact of hyperketonemia in early lactation dairy cows on health and production

Abstract: Data from 1,010 lactating lactating, predominately component-fed Holstein cattle from 25 predominately tie-stall dairy farms in southwest Ontario were used to identify objective thresholds for defining hyperketonemia in lactating dairy cattle based on negative impacts on cow health, milk production, or both. Serum samples obtained during wk 1 and 2 postpartum and analyzed for beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations that were used in analysis. Data were time-ordered so that the serum samples were obtained at… Show more

“…BHBA values greater than 1.2mmol/L were used as a cut--off value for risk factor of a cow develop ketosis (Dufϐield et al 2009 (52) and BHBA (54), leading to a 24.76% prevalence of subclinical ketosis. These results are related with the appearance of ketone bodies in urine, since 102 samples were positive, resulting in 23.87% prevalence of subclinical ketosis.…”

“…In this period, there is an energy deϐicit that propitiates lipid mobilization from body adipose tissue and, consequently increases in blood concentration of NEFA and ketone bodies (Ingvarsten & Andersen 2000). High concentration of NEFA and ketone bodies can result in subclinical ketosis or clinical ketosis (Dufϐield 2000, Dufϐield et al 2009). Body condition scores provide an indication of the energy status of dairy cattle (Smith et al 1997).…”

“…It is worth noting that the average plasma BHBA concentration ranged from 1.4 to 1.7 mmol/l for the three treatments in the present study. Duffield et al (2009) concluded that cows with serum BHBA concentration higher than 1.4 mmol/l can be classified as subclinically hyperketonemic, and might be compromised and milk production may be reduced. The early lactating cows in the present study were fed a restricted amount of concentrate to determine treatment effects on silage intake without interactions with varying concentrate intake.…”
