The use of both spec tro met ric meth ods al lows for com par i son of the to tal and aqua regia-extractable con tents of ele ments. The study ar eas en com passed three his toric metal-ore min ing sites and one aban doned mine tail ings site in the Holy Cross Moun tains, in south-cen tral Po land. Sam ple col lec tion in these ar eas, which are char ac ter ized by var i ous bedrock min er al ogy and li thol ogy and dif fer ent anthropogenic im pacts, en abled us to test the FPXRF per for mance for a wide range of el e ment con cen tra tions. The re sults of FPXRF and ICP-MS de ter mi na tions were found to be sig nif i cantly cor re lated with the high est r 2 (co ef fi cient of de ter mi na tion) value of 0.987-0.991 for Pb, ir re spec tive of the soil min er al ogy, bed rock lithol ogy or con cen tra tion lev els of this el e ment. Over all, the FPXRF showed ex cel lent per for mance in de ter min ing se lected trace el e ments in con tam i nated soils.

Geochemical background of potentially toxic trace elements in soils of the historic copper mining area: a case study from Miedzianka Mt., Holy Cross Mountains, south-central Poland

The aim of this study was to evaluate the geochemical background and spatial distribution patterns of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, U and Zn) in 62 surface soil samples collected in the historic Cu mining area (Miedzianka Mt., Holy Cross Mountains, south-central Poland). In the study area the mining activity dates back to the fourteenth century. After the shutdown of mining operations in 1953, the soil was not remediated and neither its mineralogy nor chemistry was examined. The examined soils showed a high variability in the element concentrations. The threshold values defined as the upper limits of geochemical background range (mg kg -1 in parentheses) were Cr (63), Mn (2156), Ni (39), Cu (52), Zn (175), As (36), Cd (2), Pb (73) and U (1.9). A high percentage of the samples exhibited trace element concentrations above the upper limit of the geochemical background range. The threshold values were evaluated in this study with application of the iterative 2r-technique. All of these values exceeded the standards recommended for soils in protected areas of Poland. The sampling points with anomalous concentrations of potentially toxic trace elements were located mostly in southern and western parts of the study area close to the sites of former mining activities. Very high concentrations of As, Cr and Ni at several sites may adversely influence the environment. High positive correlations between all the determined elements may be indicative of a common geogenic source of these elements and their geochemical affinity.

Mountain catchments provide for the livelihood of more than half of humankind, and have become a key destination for tourist and recreation activities globally. Mountain ecosystems are generally considered to be less complex and less species diverse due to the harsh environmental conditions. As such, they are also more sensitive to the various impacts of the Anthropocene. For this reason, mountain regions may serve as sentinels of change and provide ideal ecosystems for studying climate and global change impacts on biodiversity. We here review different facets of anthropogenic impacts on mountain freshwater ecosystems. We put particular focus on micropollutants and their distribution and redistribution due to hydrological extremes, their direct influence on water quality and their indirect influence on ecosystem health via changes of freshwater species and their interactions. We show that those changes may drive pathogen establishment in new environments with harmful consequences for freshwater species, but also for the human population. Based on the reviewed literature, we recommend reconstructing the recent past of anthropogenic impact through sediment analyses, to focus efforts on small, but highly productive waterbodies, and to collect data on the occurrence and variability of microorganisms, biofilms, plankton species and key species, such as amphibians due to their bioindicator value for ecosystem health and water quality. The newly gained knowledge can then be used to develop a comprehensive framework of indicators to robustly inform policy and decision making on current and future risks for ecosystem health and human well-being.
