Impact of heavy metal lead stress on polyamine levels in Halomonas BVR 1 isolated from an industry effluent

Abstract: In living systems, environmental stress due to biotic and abiotic factors triggers the production of myriad metabolites as a potential mechanism for combating stress. Among these metabolites are the small polycationic aliphatic amine molecules - polyamines, which are ubiquitous in all living organisms. In this work, we demonstrate a correlation between cellular concentration of three major polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) with lead exposure on bacteria for a period of 6–24 h. We report that ind… Show more

“…have been frequently reported to produce EPS for bioremediation of metals. ,, Halomonas sp. Exo1, Halomonas elongate , Halomonas BVR1, and Halomonas sp. , were discovered to remediate arsenic, cadmium, lead, and hexavalent chromium in previous studies. EPS composition and availability of various binding sites could influence the binding affinity of metals to EPS .…”

“…Enriched GO terms related to stress responses include DNA protection ( 26 ) and heavy metal detoxification, specifically responses to nickel and mercury ions ( 27 ). Additionally, several pathways related to compatible solutes are enriched, including synthesis and catabolism of ectoine ( 28 , 29 ), spermidine and putrescine ( 30 , 31 ). Finally, GO terms associated with Halobacteria were enriched, including gas vesicle formation ( 32 ).…”

“…In addition, ∼56.6% of Micrarchaeota and ∼63.2% of Parvarchaeota possessed the ability to produce spermidine and spermine from agmatine. Polyamines such as spermine and spermidine could regulate cellular antioxidant activity and remove ROS ( 70 ), which might confer adaptive benefits for Micrarchaeota and Parvarchaeota , which mostly inhabited acidic niches rich in heavy metals ( 34 ). As expected, these adaptive enzymes (i.e., SpeB, SpeC, SpeD, and ArcA) in DPANN archaea were also found to have been acquired via LGT (see Fig.…”
