Impact of Harness Fit on Suspension Tolerance

Abstract: Objective-This study investigated the effect of body size and shape and harness fit on suspension tolerance time.Background-Fall victims may develop suspension trauma, a potentially fatal reduction of return blood flow from legs to the heart and brain, after a successfully arrested fall if they are not rescued quickly or the harness does not fit them well.

“…Increased harness thigh strap angle and low harness back D-ring location were found to correlate to post-fall harness poor fit. NIOSH also has reported the effects of body characteristics and harness fit on human suspension tolerance time38 ) and the merits and risks of fall-arrest system use for operators of mechanized access platforms39 ) . Decreased suspension tolerance time was associated with body size (i.e., weight, stature, upper- and lower-torso depths; r=−0.36 ~ −0.45, p ≤0.03).…”

“…Poor fit of respirator units can result in serious health effects in firefighting, coal mining, hazardous waste cleanup, and other workplace conditions due to exposure to environmental hazards. An improperly conformed fall-arrest harness would not provide adequate protection to workers who work at height and could increase the risk of suspension trauma after a successful fall arrest (Hsiao, Turner, Whisler, & Zwiener, 2012). Insufficient protective volumes for vehicle rollover protection would not provide satisfactory mitigation of driver injury risks.…”
