“…After testing several alternative specifications, we settled on a categorical and a linear method of measuring gentrification. The categorical measure allows us to use an empirical definition of gentrification that is grounded in the Chicago data, and has been used by several researchers and policy groups (Mir and Sanchez 2009;Pattillo 2008). The linear method uses percent change in census indicators of SES to approximate the extent of gentrification.…”

“…Longitudinal experiments occurred in only a few studies and usually took the form of trend analyses of secondary data (and, to a lesser extent, primary data referring to environmental practices), aiming to track changes in environmental impact and performance (e.g., Burton ; Charara et al. ; Mir and Sanchez ).…”

“…A smaller subset of green gentrification studies reflects supply-side or gentrifier-led theories of gentrification, thereby reversing the hypothesized temporal relationship between greening and gentrification. From this perspective, gentrifiers are those leading the demand for a clean and green environment as part of their search for improved built environments (Baviskar, 2003; Mir and Sanchez, 2009). For instance, Baviskar (2003) noted that ‘bourgeois environmentalism’ in India led to the displacement of slums in the name of environmental clean-up.…”
