Impact of front‐of‐pack labels in chocolate bars and soft drinks on consumer perceptions: A cross‐sectional study using free word association

Abstract: Food packaging is a factor used to attract consumer attention and generate sensory and hedonic expectations. Most food packaging use conventional labels having the nutritional table as the main component; however, other alternatives such as the traffic light (TL) and warning labels have been proposed to the food industry as an alternative to improve the consumer interpretation related to food products. “…In the current research, dimensions and categories were built regarding the PBH packages for the word triangulation obtained in WA methodology. Words with similar meanings were grouped into similar categories through inductive coding by triangulation 11,16 . Three researchers' consensus determined the final dimensions and categories, and the categories mentioned by at least 5% of the volunteers were considered for analysis 19 …”

“…Word association (WA) is a qualitative methodology based on the free listing frequently used in the food area to investigate sensorial aspects, emotions in foods, and consumers' perception. 11,16 In research involving WA a stimulus (e.g., images) is given to the respondents who then write about the associations and the mental representations of the stimulus. 12,17,18 In the current research, dimensions and categories were built regarding the PBH packages for the word triangulation obtained in WA methodology.…”
