Impact of Free-Ranging European Bison to Ecosystems in Fragmented Landscape, Lithuania

Abstract: European bison (Bison bonasus L.) is the largest herbivore in Europe. Historically, it was distributed throughout western, central, and south-eastern Europe. Habitat degradation and fragmentation due to agricultural activity, forest loggings, and unlimited hunting were the main reasons for the decrease and extinction of European bison populations. In Lithuania, European bison were exterminated in the seventeenth century, but reintroduced in 1969. The species is still included in the country's Red Data Book. Th… Show more

“…Knowledge of their movement and habitat use in a human-dominated landscape is essential for further successful reintroductions of the European bison [18]. We therefore need to understand the movement patterns and habitat use of species if we wish to effectively predict and limit the impact of environmental changes on populations [19,20]. The formation and dispersal of European bison female herds is an event that is rarely observed within populations.…”
