The middle and long-term slowdown in growth dynamics could bring serious social and political problems for V4 countries (Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Poland) and Romania. It would threaten reaching benefits from potential of convergence process with the developed countries of the European Union. As a result, the V4 economies and Romania should find solutions to achieving a sustainable growth that is associated with an improvement of their international competitiveness. This paper provides an empirical analysis of factors that might determine a stable economic growth in the five mentioned countries. The empirical analysis conducted for the period of 2003-2016 employed Bayesian generalized ridge regression. The main results indicated that the FDI promoted economic growth in all countries, except the Slovak Republic. Only in the Czech Republic, the expenditure on education generated economic growth, while the expenditure on R&D had positive effects in Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is to examine the impact of inward and outward foreign direct investment on innovation performance of the Visegrad and Baltic countries.Methodology/Approach: The study follows an open-system approach to consider the determinants of national innovation performance, taking into account both inward and outward FDI. We use two-step analysis that combines panel data regression analysis with the design of two FDI – innovation performance matrixes.Findings: The results of the study provide evidence that only outward foreign direct investment of domestic firms contributes significantly to the innovation performance of these countries and that this effect is more visible in the case of the Visegrad countries.Research Limitation/Implication: The limitations of the study are associated in particular with the selection of SII as a measure of national innovation performance. The use of this indicator is also related to the relatively short period of availability of consistent data, especially in connection with changes in the methodology of SII calculation.Originality/Value of paper: The policy implications of the paper suggest the need for stronger support of domestic bearers of cross-border capital movements in an attempt to boost national innovation performance.

Regional distribution of the foreign direct investments in the context of the economic level of the regions of the Czech Republic Abstract: Foreign direct investments (FDIs) are one of the key factors determining the development of the world economy as well as national and regional economies. The paper is focused on the assessment of the distribution of the FDIs in relation to the economic level of the regions. The paper is based on the assumption that the foreign direct investments are beneficial for regional economies. The aim of the paper is to assess whether FDIs contribute to reduction or increase of differences in the economic level of the regions in the Czech Republic. The study verifies the hypothesis: "Foreign direct investments are realized over-proportionally in the regions with a higher economic level and so the differences in the economic level of the regions of the Czech Republic are deepening." The impacts of FDIs on the economic development are assessed in the theoretical part. The theoretical part is oriented on the relations of the FDIs and the labour market, the technology transfer, the domestic firms, export potential and other issues. The hypothesis was tested by the concentration analysis. This analysis confirmed that FDIs were realized over-proportionally in the regions with higher economic level and thus the FDIs were contributing to deepening of the differences in the economic level of the regions. The analysis confirmed over-proportional volume of FDIs in regions with higher gross domestic product and gross value added over the whole reference period from 1999 to 2016 and in the regions with lower unemployment rate in the period from 2009 to 2016.
