“…One CSR agenda is implemented by state‐owned large enterprises that align with the duality of the demands from the local society and the global arena, and another agenda is favoured by family‐owned SMEs and is often aimed at responding to local expectations and building a positive image within the local communities. The findings of this study are consistent with Samara, Jamali, Sierra, and Parada () and Charbel, Ellie, and Samara () who found that family‐owned businesses are more likely to have a strong attachment to their local communities, but these scholars extend their findings by suggesting that the nature of governance structures can either enhance or inhibit the firms’ ability to adopt a broad‐based sustainability agenda.
