Impact of exclusive enteral nutrition on the gut microbiome of children with medical complexity

Abstract: Background Children with medical complexity (CMC) often require enteral tube feedings to meet their nutrition needs. Many, however, experience symptoms of feeding intolerance, such as vomiting and pain. The goal of this analysis was to examine the relationship between diet and the gut microbiome, controlling for medications, among CMC receiving enteral tube feedings, CMC consuming oral nutrition, and healthy controls. Given the variety of available commercial formula preparations, we were also interested in ex… Show more

“…In the 2017 publication by Gloor, he proposed the use of the AD for compositional data 47 . While in previous years, other distance metrics were more widely used, more recently other microbiome studies are using the AD for beta diversity measurements 52 55 . We used the AD in this work to assess the closeness of the overall observed compositional structure to the expected compositional structure for each mock community sample, and comparison of pipelines by taxonomic accuracy revealed several interesting trends.…”
